easing into the new year
"New Year's resolutions are like seeds planted in the soil of January. They require time, patience, and nourishment to grow into meaningful change. Just as nature waits for the right season to bloom, so should we allow ourselves the time to unfold and transform." - Unknown
We came across this beautiful quote during the holidays. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find out who it belonged to (please let us know if you do), but its message is a gentle reminder that we need to be kind to ourselves as we work through our goals this year. It’s something that we can also apply in many situations - in times when we are learning something new, starting a new job or a new hobby, or building a relationship with another person or with ourselves. The journey towards meaningful change can be as rewarding as achieving the goal itself.
For many, the New Year is an invitation to refresh, to turn over a new leaf or start a new page. Often, a lot of us find ourselves making resolutions with the hopes of being transformed, only to fall back into our old habits after a few days or weeks. Perhaps it’s because we needed a more solid plan. Perhaps there were external factors such as busy schedules or life events that kept us from staying committed to our goals. Or perhaps, we just needed more time to integrate new practices into our everyday life. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be a new year to start again.

Taking inspiration from the inherent wisdom of nature, we may recognize that we need the right conditions to thrive. Just as a seed needs water, sunlight, and nutrients to sprout, we need to give ourselves time, patience, and kindness as we make intentional efforts towards our goals.
As we begin the new year, not only could we ask ourselves what we would like to change, but also how and why. By doing so, we can begin to explore what exactly those conditions are that we need to thrive and discover how we can take a gentler, one step-at-a-time approach. We could reflect and consider the question, “What is emerging in my future self?” And in our exploration, we may uncover a deeper understanding of ourselves and our motivations.
For example, if the goal is to get good quality sleep, consider beginning by setting up the environment for success - making the bed in the morning so that it feels comfortable to return to at night, leaving the phone outside of the bedroom, or easing into a relaxed state by playing calming music. In asking why we want to have better sleep, we may realize that beyond gaining more energy, we would like to feel more present and connected with the world around us.
As we mindfully make our way through the year, it’s important to remember that the set-backs we encounter could be opportunities for growth - a chance for us to learn, reevaluate, or redirect. There are seasons of rapid growth and there are quieter seasons of reflection. Nature teaches us that change is a gradual process - each set-back and milestone contributes to who we become at the end of the year.
By aligning ourselves with the natural rhythm of transformation, we can cultivate a mindset that values the journey as much as the destination.
May we find comfort and assurance in understanding that, much like nature, our most significant transformations unfold in their own time.
We wish everyone a happy, healthy New Year. We look forward to growing with you in 2024.
