Steady Through the Seasons

Apr 22, 2025

At Equinimity, there have been a number of times when we would begin a meeting at the start of a new month with a sense of wonder. One of us would say, “Can you believe it’s already (insert month/season)?”

There are moments when it just feels like time, life, the world is moving too fast. It could feel as though so much is going on or even when days are repetitive, time simply gets away from us. In these moments, we often long for something that grounds us - something steady, unchanging, and true. Perhaps we reach for nostalgia, returning to familiar memories, places, rituals, or even TV shows from the past because they offer comfort. They remind us of who we were, and in some ways, who we still are. We know what to expect. There are no surprises.

But while there’s comfort in looking back, there’s also beauty in appreciating and capturing the fleeting moments of the present time. When it feels like we need to hit pause and catch our breath, nature offers us an immediate and timeless way to ground ourselves. The trees, the sky, the warm breeze, and for us, the gentle sounds of horses in the distance, remind us that while life is ever changing, we can count on the steady rhythm of the earth to bring us back to center. These simple moments hold a quiet wisdom - one that doesn’t need words, only presence.

When we step outside, we often begin to mirror what we see. Our breath slows. Our thoughts quiet. The mind stops bracing against the next thing and starts to observe, receive and reflect.

In these moments, we notice what brings us home to ourselves. It might be the warmth of the sun on our skin, the texture of soil between our fingers, or the deep, grounded eye of a horse meeting our gaze. They gently remind us that we are here. And in this moment, we are safe. We are okay. We are enough.

At Equinimity, while we are fortunate to be close to horses and nature, and have plenty of opportunities to anchor ourselves in the present, we also experience tides of change and the swiftness of time. We, too, find ourselves in seasons of transition – shifting roles, new offerings, unfamiliar territory. Growth often arrives in waves, sometimes gentle, sometimes in more unexpected surges. And when it feels like a lot is happening, we lean into the very practices we share with our community: pausing, listening, and reconnecting with our breath, with our bodies, with nature, and the quiet strength of the herd. The horses remind us that we don’t need all the answers to move forward. We just need presence, trust, and the courage to take the next step, even if it’s a small one. We lean into the natural world. We notice who and what centers us, and this steadies our footing and helps us keep going.

For those of us who feel overwhelmed by the changes in the world and how fast time seems to move, there is a gentle invitation to spend a few moments in nature – to feel the goodness of deep breaths in our bodies and to kindly reflect on what helps us feel grounded. Perhaps in that moment, we can reconnect with something steady and true – something that reminds us of our own resilience.

From breathing exercises, to mindful movements, to listening to the sounds of nature, the smallest pause can offer clarity, presence, and a sense of ease in a world that often rushes by.
