The Groundwork of Growth

May 19, 2025

This month, we heard a couple of sneezes within our community signaling that allergy season is upon us. But it also reminded us that spring is at its peak. Aside from allergies, spring gifts us gorgeous views of the desert in full bloom. Flowers abound, a sweet scent of nature hangs in the air, and the landscape comes alive with vibrant colors. It’s a time when the desert puts on a show that reminds us of its quiet resilience.

While we often find ourselves relishing in the beauty of nature, we seldom consider all the work that took place for it to get to this point. For wildflowers and plants to flourish, rain must first fall, soaking the dry desert soil during the monsoon season, quenching the thirst of the land. Birds, bees, and other pollinators carry seeds and pollen across the terrain, helping life multiply. And the near 300 days of sunshine Tucson receives each year fuel photosynthesis, enabling plants to grow, survive, and eventually bloom.

So much unseen effort goes into the beauty we marvel at each spring. The desert, in its own time and way, prepares for this moment. What seems like a sudden explosion of life is actually the result of slow, steady, often invisible progress. And the more we take time to notice this, the more we’re reminded that nature isn't just something to observe - it holds wisdom that we can learn from.

In many ways, our lives as humans reflect the rhythms of nature. We’re constantly growing and evolving, even if it doesn’t always feel like it. We are each a work in progress, regardless of the season we’re in. Some seasons are colorful and joy-filled, others are quiet, uncertain, or even difficult. There are times in our lives when everything seems to flow with ease - when we feel deeply aligned and seen. And there are times when we’re just trying to make it through, planting seeds we hope will one day grow, unsure if anything is even happening beneath the surface.

In those slower, more uncertain seasons, it can feel like the environment just isn’t right for growth. Maybe there’s too much noise, not enough clarity, or we’re navigating challenges that feel more like survival than progress. It's easy to wonder if anything meaningful is actually taking root.

And yet, nature shows us otherwise. Wildflowers bloom in the harshest deserts. Trees take root in rocky soil. Life finds a way in the unlikeliest places . In much the same way, we often discover our own strength and resilience when the conditions aren’t ideal. We adapt. We persevere. And slowly, quietly, we grow. The journey may not always be visible, but it’s happening - and often, the struggle becomes part of the wisdom we carry forward.

When we see someone else’s bloom - their success, their clarity, their sense of purpose - it’s easy to forget that what we’re seeing is often the result of unseen growth. We may glance at someone and admire how confident, successful, or composed they seem. But what we don’t always see is the effort it took to get there - the setbacks they overcame, the years of perseverance, the late nights, the self-doubt they had to quiet, and lots of trial and error. These are rarely visible from the outside. Yet they are the very foundation of what makes the bloom possible.

As spring continues to unfold around us, may it serve as a gentle reminder that every stage of growth holds value. Whether in full bloom or quietly becoming, we are all part of something meaningful in motion.

Growth takes time, kindness, and patience. Often, it’s happening even when it can’t be seen. There’s something comforting in knowing that progress doesn’t always look like forward motion. Sometimes it looks like pausing, tending to the roots, or simply making space for what’s next.
